I might be getting a car in a few months to a year. My heart says buy an S2000, but my brain says “Dude wtf are you doing! Your gonna crash it! You have like zero experience with RWD, and you have only driven around 40 hours at most! Go save your money and buy a used mk5 gti instead.”

Ps. I’m 15 this about my first car

perhaps find a cheap mx5 to get used to rwd before splashing out on an s2000 and wrecking it, I’ve read comments the s2000s can be prone to snap oversteer which isn’t good for a beginner on public roads

Not true, it’s also about ownership. IE: WRX rates are actually higher than one for a STi because too many people can’t afford a STi, buy a WRX, and then crash it.

Just practice throttle control and you’ll be fine. I went from a midsize FWD automatic sedan with traction everything to a RWD manual roadster with no traction control at all, in the middle of winter. Spun out the first day I got it but I survived to date just fine, even been through a few snow storms where I blaze past stuck crossovers.

Not hard, just not as easy since the GTI doesn’t suffer from AP1 snap-oversteer. AP2's seem to have that better under control but shit still happens in a powerful RWD car. By the way, you do realize you’ll be a 15/16 year-old in a RWD car that makes 235+hp? Insurance companies are gonna give you some painful rates.

The S2000 is not a car for newbie RWD drivers.

When they came out, I knew a few (just happened to be) Civic owners who went to the S2k and promptly crashed out. One after another. It was hilarious and sad at the same time.

I’d say go with the Golf GTI or GTD or something similar. More than plenty for a starter car.

MR2 Spyder (yeah, I know, owner’s bias, blah blah) then! It’s a mid-engined Miata, with a forgiving stock set-up. However, if you want to move towards a more lively balance and (snap) oversteer later on, you can simply eliminate tire stagger. It’s got Corolla bones, so should be reliable (if you get an 03+) and cheap to run.

Very unpractical though.

Good grief, RWD isn’t going to kill you. All else being equal the handling in an RWD car is easier and more predictable than in a FWD car. If you can afford the Honda go for it.

By “afford” I am including the auto insurance. Be prepared for a heart attack when you see how much it costs to insure a 16-year-old in either an S2000 or a GTI. It cost six times what I pay to insure myself in a Miata to insure my teen-age daughters in Corollas, and a Corolla doesn’t shout out to the underwriter “Hey, watch me go like a race car!”

I’m 18 and own a MK5 GTI.

I love it.

Don’t buy one as your first car.

From one young car guy to another, the best advice I can give you is to buy something cheap. Something that will teach you how to work on a car, how to drive a car, and how to love a car.

Cheap does not mean boring. My first car was the furthest thing from boring. I made the choice to buy something old and finicky and I’m damn glad I did.

My first car had rear wheel drive, no ABS, no traction control, and a stick. I also learned how to drive in the middle of winter in Northern Indiana. I can now pretty much handle any driving condition because of it.

My first car also had a lot of weird mechanical maladies. Because of this I’ve had a lot of experience working on cars and obtain basic mechanical knowledge that I didn’t have before.

I’ve always loved the S2000, but I feel they are currently selling for more than they are worth, and I know that having a two seat car in high school is a bummer.

Think ahead to the night of your senior prom. You and your date leave the venue and are just driving around. You can’t take her back to your house because your parents are still up and you can’t go to her house because her dad is terrifying. You have no backseats and you have a transmission tunnel ensuring your bodies are completely separated. Bummer.

I know you’ll likely disregard my advice because I remember being 15 and I know I disregarded every single piece of advice I was given that year, but I’m telling you what I would tell my 15 year old self about car buying.

Also: don't be afraid to completely shy away from what you plan to buy if another opportunity presents itself.

Get the S2000 but please don’t wreck it, they are too pretty for that. Otherwise get a cheaper, more common car and get good at driving.

Also consider ensurance, fuel consumption, maintenance and parts cost if you are going to be a responsable car owner. Because I don’t see the VW being cheap to own.

What’s your budget? Also are you or your parents paying for repairs and maintenance? It makes a difference. I was gifted my first car by my grandparents, my granddad bought it new in 1997 and gave it to me instead of trading it in, and my parents paid for insurance/gas/maintenance. Nothing wrong with a RWD car as your first car, every drivetrain has it’s pros and cons. You just have to remember that you’re inexperienced and you’ll have to learn the car regardless of whatever you get.

That isn’t actually what I have seen in my area where wagons are cheaper. It’s more that the sedans are bought as performance vehicles while the wagons are bought as fun family/stuff haulers. Overall wagon owners tend to be more responsible.

I’m going to suggest something and you’re not going to want to hear it, but it’s totally what you should get. Ready?

A 10-year-old Chevy Impala.

Nope, I’m totally serious. Hear me out; what you actually need is a transportation device. You want something fun, I know. I felt the same way. But my first car was the equivalent of what I’m recommending now (an ‘83 Celebrity).

One, it’s cheap. Cheap to buy, cheap to run, will get decent mpg, cheap to insure, and should be reasonably reliable. Cheap is what you really need. Running a car is expensive, and unless your family is above middle class and you’re going to have lots of extra money, you’ll have to think about that stuff. Especially if you have to fund your automotive adventures solely from a part time job while you are in school. Plus, if something like this is your daily driver, that means you can start to save money so you can get a project/fun car on the side eventually.

Two, if you’re planning to go to college, a car with room to move your stuff is invaluable. A 4-door midsize sedan is no pickup truck, but they can hold a LOT. This is a huge plus.

Three, and depending where you live you may not get to do this for a couple years, it will have room for your friends. And if you’re worried your friends will make fun of your dad car, don’t. If it’s a choice between being seen in your friend’s lame car or walking, the lame car wins out every single time.

Let me tell you, I did not suffer at all from having a boring car for my first. I didn’t have to worry about speeding (what with its fire-wheezing 112-hp V6), it got low 20's MPG which was ok to deal with, the insurance didn’t break me, and when I did get into accidents (and you WILL get into an accident, it’s virtually certain), it was big enough to take care of me and not get too banged up in the process. The thing was unkillable.

It doesn’t have to be a Chevy, any midsize car will do, really. But I bet the Chevy is the most plentiful, so you should be able to find a decent one on the cheap.

Road accidents are not the result of losing control of the car. If you lose control of the car you are driving beyond the capabilities for you and your car in the conditions. You should NEVER end up in that situation in dry or wet conditions. The vast majority of road accidents come from not paying attention, being distracted (texting, talking on the phone, playing with the radio, messing with anything in the car really), misreading the traffic around you, and misjudging how people are going to react to different situations. It takes thousands of hours to really learn how to read traffic and be able to anticipate how the cars around you are going to react. About 6 months after I got my liscense I was rear ended by a distracted driver while I was stopped behind a box truck which was trying to turn left (luckily no damage to either car). I was also rear ended in traffic last spring. What happened was I started pulling forward when a GMC started to back into my lane in front of me while doing a three point turn and I braked, leaving about 1.5 car lengths between me and the GMC. The volvo behind me did not expect me to stop again so quickly (traffic was still moving in front of me) and hit me from behind.

TL;DR: It isn’t car control that prevents accidents, its years of experience dealing with traffic and knowing how it is going to react that prevents accidents. The smallest mistake can total cars and possibly cause injuries or worse.

Its not always irrisponsibility that causes wrecks, its lack of experiance.

98% of my close calls were due to lack of experiance, in fact driving is like drawing, even if theres natural talent it needs practice to amount to anything.

I’m gonna be different and tell you to go for it. If you are responsible, you will be fine. My brother is 17 and he drives my 335i (300hp/300tq RWD 6mt) all the time. I’ll probably be selling it to him before his senior year starts if I don’t it keep myself.

Get one of these. It isn’t very fast stock, but it is RWD, has a large modding community, and is reliable. Since you aren’t very experienced (just saying), an S2k isn’t a great idea. The IS should be cheaper to insure too.

You will absolutely wreck your first car, and it may not be your fault. You just don’t have the instincts - ones that only come with experience - to avoid other drivers who don’t know what they’re doing.

Yep. What smobgirl said. I’m a pretty damn good driver for my age (25). Lots of miles, lots of experience driving both in normal circumstances and not normal, decent amount of karting/track experience so I know what to do with a car that’s misbehaving.

Still wrecked my first RWD car (fixed it though).

Still, I say don’t let fear stop you from doing something. Just understand that your limits are always lower than you think they are. Not really because you're young. More because you're human.
